So yesterday I talked about Macports giving you all that Unix goodness. Just one minor problem, starting with Lion (I think) Apple stopped including X11 with Xcode.

Now without X11 you may have all those Unix goodies, but you can only have the command line treats. This is a limitation that we just can’t stand for! Now in practice for me, the only things I regularly use that require X11 on my Mac is jconsole and VisualVm for poking and prodding Java Applications.

Fortunately, Apple was kind enough to Opensource an X11 implementation called XQuartz. Just download and install the DMG and you are off to the races. Now if I could just find a Java App that didn’t require poking and prodding.
